Every year we take a day to celebrate Dr. Seuss and his contribution to children's literature by dedicating a day to reading. The official Read Across America day is this coming Monday, March 3rd, but as Ren Learn hosted their "Reading Counts; Strive for Five Million" competition on Friday, we just combined the two. Our third grade class spent the morning reading, took a break to do some fraction work with candy, and closed the day out with a little more reading. Our K-2 literacy gurus, Miss Nara and Miss Shelby stopped by to read a couple of stories to us, and right after lunch Mr. Gray stopped by to share one of his favorite stories, "The Three Questions". We took at least 30 quizzes throughout the day and nearly every students increased his/her points. Most importantly, we had fun! So glad that some of the parents could join us as well! We are taking our HSA tests on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Perfect attendance on those days would be fantastic! Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep, a big healthy breakfast, and an encouraging hug and kiss on the way out the door. We will be testing between the hours of 8 and 10. The homework load will be a bit lighter on Monday and Tuesday because of the testing. Mahalo, and have a great week!
- Miss Cook "But teacher, I did that assignment! I know I did!"
As teachers we hear this nearly every day. Most of our students are great about completing their homework. They work very hard to get it done, often with much prompting from the adults in their lives. So when students hear, "I didn't get this assignment from you," it's no wonder they get frustrated! They finished that worksheet!!! But something was missing... As the picture above demonstrates, the biggest reason I'm missing papers is because the student does not put his/her name on it. That photo shows all of the papers handed in without a name on it for the last two weeks. Students won't get credit for completing an unnamed worksheet! At the beginning of this quarter we were doing much better as a class about having all of our work, but as we draw nearer to the end of the quarter, more and more papers are not making it to me. I check at the door every morning to make sure students hand in their papers. Those who are missing papers get a note in their planner. The amount of notes I had to write last week was the highest it's been thus far. Please make sure you are checking your child's planner every evening to see what they have been asked to complete for the next day. Finally, if students bring home a paper that says "correct" or "finish" on it, and it has not had a star drawn over it, it means I handed the paper back to be corrected or finished and I need it back before the child receives a grade. Thanks again for partnering with me in your child's education. Aloha, - Miss Cook I apologize profusely for the amount of homework that came home on Thursday. Through a series of unfortunate events, my sub who worked with the class on Thursday mistook a pile of papers for homework, when it was actually a pile of papers I needed COPIES of. Also, the worksheet that I DID want to go home was not passed out. Thanks for the late night and hard work you put in to finish "all that ridiculous-what-is-miss-cook-thinking homework"!
On the bright side, now your child will be just a little bit more ready for the HSA. You may see some of those papers again, but it will be AFTER I actually teach the concept, and not with so many other papers added. Thank you for your understanding and enjoy your three day weekend! - Miss Cook Spending time with those people in your life whom you love is so important, but when you have multiple groups of people whom you love, it can be difficult to balance that time. My sisters are here for ten days (yay!) on the island, and I took the day off to spend it with them. What I was most excited for, however, was introducing the sisters I love to the other most important group in my life, all 28 of the little people that I am with five days a week, eight hours a day. We visited the classroom today for a total of five minutes, and it was so good to see two such valuable parts of my life together in the same place.
I hope you are able to find a moment this weekend to truly appreciate your family and enjoy time with them. There really is nothing better. - Miss Cook Click on the word "Newsletter" to access this week's copy. Click on the "Contact Me" box to the right if you have any comments or questions!
-Miss Cook So sorry the homework page hasn't been updated this week. I've been battling a fever/cold this last half of the week and have been putting all of my efforts into resting. I will be back in full swing by next week, promise! My main piece that I am now holding the students accountable for is their reading log. After just looking through how many have earned points since school started back up again, it is rather disheartening. Please make sure your child is reading and that you are checking his/her reading log! Even if the homework load is heavy that night (and I'm doing my best to balance it - we just have to cover so much!) ten minutes of reading to self OR reading aloud OR being read to can still make a BIG difference.
Thank you for your continued support both at home and in the classroom. - Miss Cook School is back underway, and our classroom has a new look! We will no longer be switching with Mrs. Rossman, so I moved a few things around to better accommodate our class. The daily schedule will also be looking a bit different, and I'll post a copy here once we have the kinks worked out. Please click HERE to access an overview of the curriculum. This was sent out at the beginning of the year by Mrs. Rossman, but it's always a good idea to refresh our memories of where we are headed and what we hope to accomplish this year!
