- Miss Cook
I hope you are enjoying your vacation as much as I am. I was blessed to be able to visit my family in Montana over the break, and I've added some photos to demonstrate to you how cold (and snowy) it is here. Thanks to everyone for the lovely gifts! I look forward to using them (or eating them) upon my return to the island! - Miss Cook

In this slideshow you will find an assortment of pictures, ranging from the jazz band days up until the second-to-last day of school before winter break. The photos of the students walking around the room with clipboards demonstrate an active learning activity called "Solve the Room". Students had to find and solve 24 different math problems that were distributed about the room. When asked about the activity, students said they enjoyed it because, "It was like a treasure hunt!", it "felt like a mystery we had to solve", "We got to move around", and (my favorite), "It brought us closer together as a class because we had to work with people we don't normally work with." For a class with 28 students, it is difficult to get to know everyone! I hope you enjoy this peek at life in our classroom. - Miss Cook I'm a bit late in getting this out, but a HUGE thank you to the Donager family for donating a WORKING PENCIL SHARPENER!!!! It has made our lives so much easier. You are wonderful.
I'm afraid I didn't mention this in the newsletter this week. I plan on having the class holiday party on Thursday, as I know several students leave early on Friday after the program. My plan is for us to do a reader's theater piece, play some games, and do our gift exchange (the books that everyone wrapped and brought to class). If you, as parents, would like to participate, donate treats, or even game winner prizes, any and all of the above would be welcome!
- Miss Cook Christmas break is almost here, and we are working hard to get everything packed in to these next few days! Students will be bringing home missing work packets, most of which they probably already did, were supposed to correct, and never handed back in again.
The Christmas Program will be on the field on Friday, at 8:30 am. Please have your child wear Holualoa school colors/shirt or festive clothing. Friday is a full school day. If you like, you may join us in the classroom for our read in, which is what most of our day will consist of. Thursday is our class party, which will be held in the classroom after lunch. We will be playing games and doing a book exchange. Should be fun! Happy Holidays, and may you stay safe and healthy over the break! - Miss Cook Tomorrow morning, at 7:45, we will be honoring those students who are Community Contributors. Please join us in the cafeteria!
- Miss Cook The award winning Honoka'a Jazz Band will be performing tomorrow, December 12, at 10:10 on the recess field! All classes will be attending at that time, and you are welcome to join! I am excited for the students to see what other schools are doing, and to possibly pique their interest in playing a band instrument in the future. The concert should be over by 11:00.
- Miss Cook As we worked on our opinion writing last week, I realized that our class doesn't really know how to even state an opinion correctly, much less write a paper on it. After that revelation I decided we needed to write one paper together with an opinion that I chose, so we could see what an opinion paper should look like. We read about turkeys a couple of days before writing and took notes on the information we found. Next, we started a letter (our class paper) to Farmer Gray stating that we did not think we should be eaten for Thanksgiving dinner. I've posted a picture below to demonstrate our final product. After writing the letter, the class then each received a blank turkey template with the directions to disguise the turkey so that Farmer Gray wouldn't be able to tell it was a turkey, thus saving its life. As you can see, we have a very creative and talented class! Stop by our classroom and take a look! - Miss Cook If you would like an email notification every time there is a new post on our website, simply enter your email in the little box on the left hand side of the screen and hit "subscribe". Then, every time I post something VERY IMPORTANT you will be notified! Thank you to Rachel Vierthaler for your excellent suggestion, and please let me know if it
I've been out sick for the last couple of days, and the homework section has not been updated. My apologies. Since Tuesday, students should have had a total of 4 math papers come home, and they'll bring another home tonight, Review for Chapter 4. The Chapter 4 tests will be administered Friday and Monday. Please work with your child on his/her multiplication facts! Memorization is key.
Please send any extra grocery ads you have lying around to school for next week's math project. We need quite a few of them! Ok, well, I'm going to go back to eating my saltine crackers and trying not to move. Looking forward to a better weekend! - Miss Cook |
