I've been out sick for the last couple of days, and the homework section has not been updated. My apologies. Since Tuesday, students should have had a total of 4 math papers come home, and they'll bring another home tonight, Review for Chapter 4. The Chapter 4 tests will be administered Friday and Monday. Please work with your child on his/her multiplication facts! Memorization is key.
Please send any extra grocery ads you have lying around to school for next week's math project. We need quite a few of them! Ok, well, I'm going to go back to eating my saltine crackers and trying not to move. Looking forward to a better weekend! - Miss Cook Once upon a time on a mountaintop, where the sun shines in the morning and the rain falls in the afternoon, there was this great technology that allowed one person to talk to another person even when they were really, really, really far away. Like, even as much as TWO WHOLE CLASSROOMS!!! away. But then, an even more ancient technology, called "lightning", struck - not once, but twice - and destroyed the phones. This is what we call a REALLY BIG PROBLEM!!! The technicians set to work right away, scurrying here and there, feverishly attempting to restore order (because everyone knows when communication goes, thing get really complicated!)...but to no avail. They would have to wait for help to come from another kingdom (also known as the mainland). In the meantime, the citizens of the mountaintop continue to do their best communicating, writing notes to one another, walking to see each other face to face, sending emails, and posting on their websites (just imagine if we still ran on DSL!).
All that to say....if you've been trying to reach me by phone and I haven't been answering....now you know why. - Miss Cook Here are some snapshots of our first official art activity of the year. Using watercolor paints, students created a sunset, then cut black shapes out of construction paper and glued them on. Some got very creative and even made 3D images! Next, students used descriptive Halloween words to write about their painting. Finally, students typed up their explanations on the classroom computers and - voila! - 28 beautiful pieces of art were born. Here are a couple of photos from our Student of the Month lunch assembly on Thursday! Wow. Could I have made them any more blurry?! My apologies for taking so long to get these photos up! Everyone did a great job and had a lot of fun! Tomorrow we will be honoring last month's Student(s) of the Month (Self Directed Learner) in the cafeteria during lunch. Our class will be recognizing Cameran Vierthaler, Pomai Varron, Lavence Pilapil, and Wehiwa Donager as leaders in the GLO of Self Directed Learner. We are still working on a new format for Student of the Month, so this time around we are awarding all grades during their lunches. Our lunch is from 11:50 to 12:20. If you happen to have that time available, please check in at the office and then come on down to the cafeteria to join us in cheering on the students!
-Miss Cook Today I had a sub. Today that sub struggled with the math lesson. By association, your child may also struggle with the math homework. Put the pencil down! I will reteach the lesson tomorrow, and we will attempt the homework again if it is proving a struggle. Thank you for your understanding and enjoy the rest of your
Please notice that the "Study Sites and Fun" link has moved to replace the "Classwork" link. We weren't really using the "Classwork" page anyway....
Both candy and calculators were causing problems this week, and I respectfully ask that both be left at home. Candy has been known to be used as a relationship bartering tool. Also, all that sugar turns most students lethargic.
In regards to calculators, some students were caught trying to use their calculators to complete their multiplication homework, and others were playing with them at recess on the field and had them confiscated by a recess attendant. While I realize that, in the "real world", we can take our calculators with us anywhere to figure things out, what the students need to learn right now are the concepts behind the math (repeated combining of equal groups) just like they need to be able to understand how time is measured (learning to read an analog clock instead of a digital one). They are not allowed to use their multiplication tables to complete their work (only to check it), and we aren't quite ready for the chapter on calculators yet. Until then, I appreciate your consideration in this matter. Have a fantastic holiday weekend, and I will see your children on Wednesday, as they will have a substitute on Tuesday. Aloha, Miss Cook |
